A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its duties in national projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
