The US government revealed it would grant limited support to millions of food stamp beneficiaries as the ongoing federal closure approached a unprecedented duration.
Benefit Decrease Information
Amid growing uncertainty for the around 42 million Americans registered in the food assistance program, the Department of Agriculture indicated it would use contingency resources to sustain benefits, albeit at merely 50% of the regular amount households typically get.
Money for the program formally ran out on recently due to the federal closure, now in its 34th consecutive day with no clear signal of resolution.
Legal Proceedings
The decision came in a court filing after earlier denials to release critical funding on alleged legal grounds. A judicial authority had ruled the administration could not deny program funds due to the shutdown.
After the legal directive, the administration declared it would be "honored" to authorize emergency funding for the program.
Execution Difficulties
Authorities noted that funds could commence by the coming days, but stressed the need for additional direction from the judiciary on how to properly redirect resources for SNAP benefits.
- Some authorities have stated it will take days or even weeks to provide benefits to low-income families.
- Crowds have been documented at pantries across the country.
- In various regions, public facility car parks were repurposed into distribution sites.
State Emergency Measures
Multiple authorities, like New York, Oregon, and Virginia, declared emergency declarations to allocate temporary funds for assistance. However, these amounts were projected to be a limited percentage of the normal government funding.
The government spending for SNAP reach approximately $8 billion monthly in the United States.
