Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge particular decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in place at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
